Upper Saucon Township established a part time Police Department in the mid-1960s. On August 28th, 1973, the Upper Saucon Township Board of Supervisors formerly established a full time Police Department providing police service 24 hours per day and 365 days per year. At that time, the department consisted of Police Chief William Edmond, five full time Police Officers, and several part time Police Officers. By 1975, Chief Edmond had replaced all of the part time officers with full time officers.
During Chief Edmond’s tenure, the Police Department grew to thirteen full time officers. In 1989, the Department held its first promotional examination after which Officers William Lendvay, Robert Coyle, Richard Hofstetter, and Edward Hartman were promoted to the position of Corporal. After Chief Edmond passed away after a long battle with cancer, Corporal Robert Coyle was named Chief of Police.
Chief Robert E. Coyle served as the Police Department’s Chief of Police from 1991 through August of 2017. During this time, the department grew from 13 full time officers to 20 full time officers. In 2002, the department purchased it's first Police Dog. K-9 Vito was a 16 month old German Shepherd who was dual trained in Patrol and Narcotics detection. He served the department until his retirement in 2010. Also in 2002, an Investigator position was created to assist with criminal investigations. Prior to the Investigator position, officers were responsible for investigating all aspects of each call they received. This proved difficult with the growth of the community for officers to investigate their cases, as they were also responsible for handling new service calls, traffic details, & patrolling their assigned districts while swinging three different eight hour shifts. This led to the creation of a second full time Investigator position in 2003 . The Investigator title was changed to Detective and the Criminal Investigations Division was formed. In 2006, an officer was assigned to the Lehigh County Drug Task Force and another officer was assigned to the Southern Lehigh School District as a School Resource Officer. The two Detectives, Task Force Officer, and School Resource Officer reported directly to the Chief of Police until 2012 when an additional Corporal position was created to supervise the Criminal Investigations Division. In 2016 the rank of Corporal was amended to the rank of Sergeant.
Chief Thomas J. Nicoletti became the department's 3rd Chief of Police in August of 2017. During Chief Nicoletti's tenure, the department has grown to 24 full time officers. A second school resource officer position was created in 2019 and a third Detective's position was created in 2020. The Criminal Investigations Division is now comprised of a Detective Sergeant, 2 Detectives, and 2 School Resource Officers. In 2022, the department created an additional rank of Lieutenant to oversee the Patrol Division. In addition to the Patrol Lieutenant, the Patrol Division consists of 4 Patrol Sergeants and 13 Patrol Officers. The K-9 program also returned in 2022. K-9 Ruby is a three year old female Belgian Malinois dual trained in patrol and narcotics work.
